Holds and Procedure Turns : Canadian Edition

Procedure turns and holds are standardized patterns used to standardize and simplify how we fly certain procedures in IFR.

I wanted to have a single kneeboard size document that could keep me flying sane holds and approaches.

Here is a single page document I came up with. Having it on one page, means that I can keep it ready to hand in my Flightbook in the cockpit. It is based on the work of others I have found, from CFIs, friends, and on the net. Special thanks to Todd Covey for a seed idea.

( IMPORTANT : PLEASE READ THE DISCLAIMER AT THE BOTTOM OF THE PAGE)

Holds and PTs Entry

Do not be scared off if it seems complex. Most of the information is merely there to serve as a memory jog if you need it.

There are only a few simple steps to follow.

HOLDS:

1. Start while heading TO the fix. (Your current heading is at the 12 o’clock position).
2. Plot the hold line track on the diagram.
3. If the track falls in the brown area ( +110 to -110 degrees, clockwise), you use a DIRECT entry.
4. If the track falls in the ambiguous area (- 110 to + degrees, clockwise) you decide based on whether or not the hold line side and hold line direction are the same. If they are not the same, you have a PARALLEL entry. If they are the same, you have either a DIRECT or an OFFSET (TEARDROP) entry.

PROCEDURE TURNS:

1. Start while heading TO the fix. (Your current heading is at the 12 o’clock position).
2. Plot the hold line track on the diagram.
3. The red (STANDARD entry) and green (RACE TRACK entry) are self-explanatory.
4. Decide the ambiguous blue/tan zones by whether or not the barb of the procedure turn is on the same side as the track. Same side means you need an S-TURN entry, opposite side means a MODIFIED entry.

If you like, you can download a full-size PDF of the document to enable printing it out.
